About Roots of Regulation Counseling
At Roots of Regulation Counseling, we believe people are not broken.
Many of the struggles that bring people to therapy make sense when we understand them in the context of their experiences, relationships, environments, and nervous systems. Anxiety, overwhelm, self doubt, relationship challenges, emotional reactivity, shutdown, and disconnection are often adaptations that helped someone navigate difficult circumstances, not evidence that something is wrong with them.
Rather than asking, “What’s wrong with you?” we are more interested in asking, “What happened to you?” and “What helped you survive?”
Roots of Regulation Counseling is a women and queer owned therapy practice built on the belief that healing happens in relationship. Grounded in trauma informed care, attachment science, nervous system awareness, and authentic human connection, we strive to create a space where people feel safe enough to be fully themselves, supported enough to grow, and empowered to live in greater alignment with who they are.

Why We Created Roots
Roots was co founded by Heather DeJanovich, LCSW, and Mary D’Adam, LCSW, from a shared vision of creating the kind of practice we wanted to see in the world.
A practice where trauma informed care is more than a phrase. A practice where clinicians are encouraged to remain curious, continue learning, challenge their assumptions, and deepen their understanding of the people they serve. A practice where relationships matter, community matters, and healing is approached with humility rather than certainty.
We believe our clients deserve therapists who are committed to ongoing growth and education. Not because therapists need to have all the answers, but because understanding people is a lifelong process. As our understanding of trauma, attachment, neuroscience, and human development evolves, we believe our work should evolve too.
Roots was built from a passion for creating meaningful, informed, and compassionate care while also fostering a culture of learning, reflection, and connection among clinicians.
We believe the health of a community is strengthened when clinicians have spaces to learn from one another, challenge one another, and remain connected to the humanity at the heart of this work.
What We Believe
Symptoms are often adaptive responses to experiences, environments, relationships, and systems. Understanding the context behind our patterns creates space for self compassion, insight, and change.
Connection is one of the most powerful forces for healing. Whether through therapy, family, friendships, community, or our relationship with ourselves, growth happens when we feel seen, understood, and supported.
We do not view our clients as problems to be fixed. We believe each person carries resilience, wisdom, and an innate capacity for healing, even when life feels overwhelming.
The ways we think, feel, connect, and respond to stress are deeply influenced by our nervous systems. Learning to understand these patterns can open new possibilities for regulation, flexibility, and wellbeing.
We are committed to providing affirming, inclusive, and accessible care. We value diversity, social justice, human rights, and the inherent worth of every person who walks through our doors.
We believe our clients deserve therapists who remain curious, reflective, and committed to lifelong learning. Growth does not stop at graduation, licensure, or certification. We view ongoing education as an essential part of providing thoughtful and responsive care.

Our Goal
Several members of our team have specialized training and experience supporting neurodivergent individuals, parents, and women navigating significant life transitions. We recognize that many struggles are not the result of personal shortcomings, but of living in environments, systems, and relationships that may not fully understand or support who we are.
Our goal is to help clients better understand themselves, build on their strengths, and create lives that feel more sustainable, connected, and authentic.
We provide trauma informed therapy, EMDR therapy, anxiety counseling, relationship therapy, attachment focused therapy, and nervous system informed care in Frankfort, Illinois and through telehealth across Illinois.
More Than a Therapy Practice
Roots was founded on the belief that healing does not happen in isolation.
In addition to providing therapy, we are passionate about creating opportunities for connection, education, and community. Through clinician networking events, consultation, training opportunities, workshops, and professional community building, we strive to support not only the people who seek our services, but also the clinicians dedicated to serving them.
Our commitment to learning extends beyond the therapy room. In addition to providing therapy services, we offer professional development opportunities through consultation, networking events, continuing education, and our trauma informed fellowship program. We believe investing in the growth of clinicians ultimately benefits the individuals, families, and communities they serve.
Through the Attuned Clinician Networking Collective, our fellowship program, and other community initiatives, we hope to contribute to a culture of collaboration, curiosity, and continued growth within the mental health profession.
We believe stronger relationships create stronger communities, and stronger communities create more opportunities for healing.
Accessibility Matters
We believe access to quality mental health care should not be determined by income, identity, or circumstance.
As part of that commitment, we work to make services accessible through insurance participation, including Illinois Medicaid and many commercial insurance plans, while continually exploring ways to reduce barriers to care for the communities we serve.
Everyone deserves the opportunity to access compassionate, high quality mental health support.
