Child, Teen & Parent Support

Parenting is one of the most meaningful and challenging things many of us will ever do.

Children and teens do not always have the words to explain what they are feeling, needing, or experiencing. Instead, those experiences often show up through behavior, emotions, relationships, struggles at school, withdrawal, anxiety, irritability, or difficulty navigating everyday challenges.

At Roots of Regulation Counseling, we believe behavior is communication.

Rather than asking, “How do we stop this behavior?” we are often more interested in understanding what the behavior may be communicating and what support a child, teen, or family may need.

Our goal is not simply to reduce symptoms. Our goal is to help children, teens, and families build greater understanding, connection, resilience, and confidence.

Understanding Children Through a Different Lens

Children are not miniature adults.

Their nervous systems, brains, emotions, and relationships are still developing.

Many of the behaviors adults find challenging are often best understood as adaptive responses to stress, overwhelm, uncertainty, developmental needs, or unmet emotional needs.

At Roots, we work to understand the child behind the behavior.

We believe children do well when they can, and when they struggle, it often reflects a need for support rather than punishment.

Through therapy, we help children develop emotional awareness, regulation skills, confidence, self understanding, and healthier ways of expressing their needs.

Why Relationships Matter

Research consistently shows that relationships play an important role in helping children develop emotional regulation, resilience, confidence, and a sense of security.

When children feel safe, understood, and connected, they are often better able to manage emotions, navigate challenges, and learn new skills.

For this reason, our work often includes supporting not only the child, but also the important relationships surrounding them.

Sometimes the most meaningful changes happen not because a child has changed, but because the people around them have developed new ways of understanding and responding.

We view parents and caregivers as essential partners in the healing and growth process.

Many children and teens we work with are neurodivergent, including those with ADHD, autism, sensory differences, or learning differences.

We take a strengths based, affirming approach that focuses on understanding the child’s unique experiences rather than trying to force conformity to unrealistic expectations.

Our goal is to help children and families better understand themselves, build on their strengths, and create environments that support growth and wellbeing.

Our work with children, teens, and families is deeply informed by trauma, attachment, and nervous system science.

We understand that emotional and behavioral challenges often develop within the context of relationships, experiences, environments, and developmental needs.

By helping children and caregivers better understand these patterns, therapy can create opportunities for greater connection, regulation, flexibility, and healing.

Many of the behaviors that concern parents are not signs that something is wrong with a child. They are often signs that a child is doing their best to navigate experiences, emotions, and challenges with the tools they currently have.

When we understand behavior through a lens of curiosity rather than judgment, new possibilities for growth and connection emerge.
